Problems involved in construction included opening up of quarry to produce 1 3/4 million tons of size-graded rock required in permanent works, its transport for 20 mi by rail and 130 mi by water through creeks to site of moles, and its emplacement in works up to 5 mi off shore; many items of specially designed plant and equipment were used, three townships were built, and extensive communications network was set up; mole stability problems were overcome and unusual techniques employed in measurement of works; effect of moles on channel; cost of construction.
