Reinforcing for rectangular opening in plate
Plate, containing sizable rectangular opening with circular corner fillets, subjected to uniaxial tension, is analyzed by finite element method; values are obtained for maximum stress in unreinforced plate, plate with ring of reinforcing around edge of opening, and for several cases with strips of reinforcing parallel to direction of applied load; these values are used as measure of effectiveness of various reinforcing configurations studied; experimental confirmation of magnitude of maximum stress is presented for unreinforced plate and for one reinforced case.
