Soil investigations and test loading of piles on site of new slipway for boats up to 250 tons in Cochin; subsoil consists of upper layer of soft, normally consolidated clay in top layer; a 20 meter thick layer of stiff, overconsolidated clay and, from about 24 meters below sea level a very stiff clay; none of these clay layers would give sufficient bearing capacity for point-bearing piles; comparison of results from pile loading tests showed driven timber friction piles to be considerably more economic than bored, cast in place, piles.
