Calculation of cylindrical vessel subjected to gamma and neutron radiation; heat generated in wall of reinforced concrete pressure vessel by gamma photons and fast neutrons, as well as temperature distribution across wall and equivalent mean temperature are determined; formulas are derived for thermal stresses; their distribution is studied; various means for stress reduction are examined; as decrease in mechanical, thermal, and shielding properties of concrete is due not so much to temperature effect as to loss of interstitial water, it seems advisable to surround concrete with water mantle.
