Effect of restraint on shrinkage of masonry mortars
Restrained and unrestrained bars of masonry mortar were shrunk by changing storage condition from 100 to 50% RH; restraint was applied by rods connected to compression springs exerting pressure on shoulders molded on ends of bars; less shrinkage took place in restrained bars, and shrinkage decreased as restraining force was increased; bars with several mortar compositions were tested and effect of restraint on shrinkage differed with composition; as masonry mortar in wall is restrained, its dimensional changes will be less than those of mortar in unrestrained condition.
