Paper presents attempt to separate, from fundamental point of view, terms cohesion and internal friction for rock materials; results of both triaxial compression tests and special shear tests are analyzed, and progressive loss of cohesion for increasing strain is demonstrated from results of these tests and from results of wave transmission tests; certain aspects of practical value of these findings are discussed, especially where they apply to underground structures and foundations of dams.
