Account is given of various experiments made with rock-cutting tools of roller type; they were preliminary experiments, using simple linear rig, made to gain information for planning of more extensive experiments on rotary rig which was under construction; experiments included cutting grooves with small bevelled and toothed wheels and also examination of cutter of novel design; effect of thrust normal to rock surface, on performance of bevelled wheel and of two toothed wheels of different geometry is illustrated; some differences in characteristics of Darley Dale and Pennant Sandstones, two rocks used, are noted; and it is concluded that novel cutter merits further investigation.
