Mixed technique for computing surges in channels
Numerical scheme for computation of surge propagation within channel is developed; technique uses finite differences for space derivatives and fourth-order Runge-Kutta method for time integration; system is applied to simple wave propagation in straight uniform channel with and without friction to verify procedure and numerical stability; numerical scheme is then used to investigate surge propagation observed during Hurricane Betsy, Sept 1965, in lower reaches of Mississippi River; good agreement with observations is obtained; procedure is then applied assuming higher river stages; results are accurate and computing time is comparatively short.
