Funicular shells for transit shed floor for heavy industrial loading
Construction of transit shed was planned as part of expansion program of port facilities at Madras; first floor of proposed structure was to be used for unloading heavy cargo directly from ships; loading intensity on floor was estimated at 450 lbs/sq ft; solution was found in design using precast reinforced concrete columns, prestressed concrete beams and funicular shells; structure is believed to be first to use shells for heavy industrial floors; design and construction are described.
