Uplift capacity of shallow foundations
Resistance of soils to uplift loads was studied as aid to design of transmission tower foundations; simple model tests were carried out both in sand and in clay, for various anchor depth-to-width ratios; in sand failure mechanism was found to be significantly influenced by surface boundary and relative density of soil; in clays, negative porewater pressures were observed which accounted for large reduction in uplift resistance under sustained loading; simple design relations both for sand and clay were produced from model tests; values calculated from these relations showed reasonable agreement with results of number of full-scale tests on augered concrete footings.
