Metal halide adapts to church
Powerful light source with long life was needed in St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Nashville, Tenn; ceiling apex is 40 ft high and hanging luminaires have been ruled out; building is constructed with laminated wood rigid frames, and wood roof deck which is exposed on underside to make sloping wood ceiling; study of 400-w metal halide lamp was made and compared with use of 1500-w incandescent lamp showing that metal halide lamp would cut power requirements to 7.7 kw and reduce cost of air conditioning by $3000; rated life of metal halide lamp was 7500 hr and that of incandescent 1000 hr; other interesting aspects of overall installation are described.
