£s;300M Tarbela dam for Indus Basin
Project consists of building 9000 ft long, 465 ft high embankment dam across entire width of main river valley, group of four tunnels through rock on left bank abutment to divert river during last phase of construction and for irrigation release and power, powerhouse on right bank, near toe of main dam, two spillways cut through rock of left bank to discharge into side valley, two auxiliary embankment dams to close upstream end of side valley; essentially dam is of earth-fill design, backed up by apron of clay that decreases in thickness as distance from dam increases; this apron extends 4600 ft from dam and is 40 ft deep at foot of dam; schematic drawings are included.
