Japan National Committee on Large Dams established design criteria for high dams in 1957; articles on arch dams in these criteria were revised and made public in 1965; revised articles concerning aseismic design, i.e. dynamical treatment against earthquakes of arch dams, treatment of hydrodynamic pressures during earthquakes and strength of concrete subjected to earthquake load, are described; principles on which these regulations are based are explained.
