Examples of deterioration from frost damage of surfaces of concrete dams
Investigation in detail of six buttress dams based on roughly same design and in various areas of Japan and three gravity dams located at especially cold sites; since completion of these dams, 23 to 42 yr have elapsed; minimum temperatures are -9 to -22 C at six buttress dam sites, -18 to -36 C at three gravity dam sites and climatic conditions to which various dams are exposed differ considerably; unless exposed to corrosive waters or other especially severe conditions, deterioration of surface concrete can generally be prevented by using air-entrained concrete with materials of good quality and suitable water cement ratio.
