Central cation in oxide glasses may be surrounded as next neighbors by bridging, nonbridging or passive oxygen ions, number of which determines numbers of network-modifiers and oxygen ions that must be accommodated in second sphere; by comparing these numbers with those calculated from space available, conclusion can be drawn that certain structural units may be permitted, and that others must be forbidden.
