Strength of concrete under combined shear and direct stress
Thirty-nine hollow cylinders made of five different concrete mixes, were tested under direct compression and torsion to study failure of concrete under biaxial state of stress; results of tests are compared with similar tests by other investigators and discussed in relation to various failure criteria; tensile strength of concrete obtained by testing hollow cylinders in pure torsion was 60 to 70% of split-cylinder strength; tensile strength was not linearly related to cylinder crushing strength.
