Seismic resistance of prestressed concrete structures
Information gathered from recent earthquakes in Skopje (1963), Alaska (1964) and Niigata (1964) indicates favorable resistance of prestressed concrete structures to earthquake loads; characteristics of material which account for this behavior include -- greater flexibility and lighter weight of such structures in comparison with standard structures, higher quality connections, near elastic character of deformation under vibration, resistance to plastic deformations and cracking is much higher than in standard concrete, producing better resistance to effects of weak earthquakes; only condition to fulfill is that reinforcement be designed for loads well above limit for cracking safety.
