Alkali reactivity of dolomitic limestone aggregate
Additional evidence was obtained in support of hypothesis that excessive expansion in alkali-carbonate rock reaction is caused by moisture uptake by previously `unwetted clay' constituent; it is shown that dedolomitization reaction is necessary only to provide access of moisture to `locked-in' clay; microscopic method was used to determine specific surface of dolomite; relatively small percentages of illitic clay can account for excessive expansion shown by reactive carbonate rocks; new techniques included measurements of dimensional change of thin rock wafers and of compacts of clay and powdered rock.
