Qld. rail bridge is longest in prestressed concrete
Six approach viaduct spans and four river spans make up overall length of 990 ft 2 in. of bridge in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia; each viaduct span consists of pair of 80 ft long by 6 ft 6 in. deep prestressed concrete girders, composite with reinforced concrete deck, and simply supported at each end on 1 1/2 in. thick neoprene bearings mounted on twin cylindrical reinforced concrete columns; all five main river piers were founded on groups of 48 in. diam caissons, sunk 4 to 6 ft in rock; procedures are described of foundation installation.
