Some tendencies in failures of bridges and their foundations during earthquakes
Tendencies of damage to railway bridges and their foundations during past earthquakes in Japan are investigated; data of damage are taken mainly from report of Kanto (1923), Fukui (1948) and Tokachioki (1952) earthquakes; compared to ordinary buildings, following characteristics have strong influence on earthquake damage to bridges -- in most bridges each pier foundation is independent; in most bridges, piers and girders are not monolithic, but connected by shoes; substructure of bridge is often influenced by soil masses, such as embankments, cutting or slope.
