Denting of circular bins with eccentric drawpoints
Circular bins are structurally efficient in containing bulk solids provided load on bin is axially symmetrical; this requires axis of symmetry of bin to be vertical, and both charge into bin and draw from bin to be symmetrical with respect to axis; disturbance of symmetry introduces bending moments in shell and may cause denting of walls; in steel construction, these dents are usually more unsightly than dangerous, because plastic denting causes redistribution of stresses which tends to relieve bending moments; light steel shell which dented under eccentric draw is analyzed; formula which determines maximum permissible radius of bin with eccentric outlets is proposed; formula applies only to free-flowing bulk solids.
