Growth of longshore currents downstream of surf-zone barrier
Momentum flux considerations are used to formulate differential equation governing growth, with distance, of mean longshore current velocity in surf-zone on plane, impermeable beach due to monochromatic waves; equation is solved for flow situation downstream of surf-zone barrier and is shown to compare favorably with laboratory measurements; asymptotic (uniform flow) form of relation is shown to be in good agreement with field and laboratory data of other authors; conclusions are reached on size of laboratory models necessary to represent conditions of fully developed longshore currents.
