Two-mile linear electron accelerator at Stanford University
Machine built under contract with U S Atomic Energy Commission consists of 10,000 ft of 4 in. diam copper tube extending in straight line through concrete structure 25 ft underground; through this pipe is passed beam of electrons, accelerated to energies in 10 to 20 Bev range, by amplifying tubes housed in parallel 2 mi long building above ground; energy from these amplifiers is delivered to subterranean accelerator pipe via input couplers spaced 10 ft apart; at end of run, electron beam is directed by magnets into large target buildings, for research experiments. (n 5774 Sept 23 1966 p 462-4, n 5775 Sept 30 p 510-12)
