Buckling strength of rectangular portal frame subjected to loads that produce primary bending moments in members is examined; results indicate that critical load associated with symmetrical mode of instability is appreciably reduced by primary moment effects, whereas critical load for antisymmetrical buckling is only slightly affected; reductions are mostly caused by presence of axial thrust in cross beam; theoretical buckling loads are checked by experiments conducted on model steel frames.
