Contrasting tunnelling methods -- Fast shaft sinking in Scotland
Major excavations at site of Inverawe hydroelectric station in Scotland include drivage of main tunnel from barrage to power station, and sinking of 80 ft diam 100 ft deep surge shaft near downstream end of tunnel; each foot advance required removal of 186 cu yd solid, and best drivage in week of 11 12-hr shifts was 6 ft; mucking was carried out by single compressed air-operated Eimco 622 crawler-mounted RockerShovel loading into 2 cu yd skips hoisted by derrick and discharged into dump trucks; drivage of tunnel with ladder method of drilling.
