Bending and buckling of thin-walled open-section rings
Wagner theory for bending and buckling of straight bars of thin-walled open section is extended to circular curved bars and rings; differential equations of equilibrium are determined by summation of force components, whereas natural boundary conditions are derived by minimum potential energy principle which includes effects of nonuniform torsion, unsymmetrical loading, elastic foundation, and axial extension; buckling of ring subjected to uniform external pressure is considered; critical pressure is found to be root of cubic characteristic equation; simplified solutions are found by restricting generality, thereby reducing characteristic equation to first order.
