Support of underground roadways by arch girders
Practice of using steel arches in roadways within area adjoining advancing coal face has resulted in high maintenance cost, due to replacement of broken and distorted girders; description of new but tested type of steel arch with wooden extension legs or stilts, secured to steel legs by means of glands and bolts; can be adjusted to move at desired roof pressure, allowing gradual subsidence without damage to steel. (See also - no. 76 June 1930 pp. 225-227 11 figs.)
