Tests of 824 m long tunnel at Stuttgart, West Germany are described; fresh air was introduced into tunnel from both sides of track, it flowed to track center and from there passed upwards; exhaust air is removed by suction through apertures in roof; tests led to conclusion that elimination of air pollutants from tunnel was insufficient; further flow tests showed that by changing direction of ventilation downward from above, better ventilation is achieved. (n 8 Aug 1965 p 301-6)
