Investigation into rolling resistance theories for towed rigid wheels
Theories are based on assumptions and approximations which restrict their application to small sinkages; attempt is made to assess their validity and accuracy over wide sinkage range; rolling resistance of 16- and 20-in. diam rigid wheels of different widths was measured in laboratory soil tanks for varying loads on sand and on clay; results were correlated with footing tests; theories of M.G.Bekker and F.L. Uffelmann equate rolling resistance to vertical work done; this is shown to be incorrect and it is suggested that effect of horizontal soil deformation and slip sinkage be taken into account.
