Strain-ageing embrittlement of low carbon steel
Tensile tests on unnotched specimens were used to evaluate effect of prestrain and strain aging on low temperature mechanical properties of low carbon steel; results lead to conclusion that propagation of micro-crack through grain boundary is apparently critical stage in fracture process; effect of prestrain or strain aging treatment is to increase stress level for given total strain, so that grain boundary propagation stress is reached at lower strain; this results in change in fracture mode; practical consequences of this strain aging embrittlement are discussed.
