Dynamic versus static shear modulus for dry sand
Apparatus for static torsion testing of cylindrical specimens of soil, built by L.D.Pinson, will measure deformations of order of 10-6 radians/in. of specimen length; comparison is made of results of several static torsion tests of specimens of dry sand at different confining pressures with published results for dynamic vibration tests made by B.O.Hardin and F.E.Richart, Jr, (see Engineering Index 1963 p 1985); it is concluded that rate of loading has no effect on initial tangent shear modulus, as defined in this paper, for dry sand.
