Investigation revealed unguarded electric light bulb as likely cause of one of most serious catastrophes in history of nitrocellulose; more than 50,000 nitrocellulose X-ray films were stored in basement four-story concrete building; although fireproof construction, room was not ventilated nor equipped with automatic sprinklers; when heat from bulb started decomposition of film, great volumes of poisonous and explosive gases were generated and quickly permeated entire structure.
