Monte Carlo simulation of pile performance
Interaction of engineered foundations with earth as probabilistic environment is investigated; effect of statistically variable soil deposits on foundation design parameters is of primary concern; Monte Carlo simulation technique is discussed and applied to specific example; replacement of analytical inference with observation via simulation is emphasized; example presented consists of prediction of design variables such as mean length, and other factors for friction piles driven into two-layer soil deposit overlying rock; strength of soil and depth to rock are treated as stochastic variables; importance of size of sample required for competent simulation is discussed.
