Influence of aggregate on behaviour of concrete at elevated temperatures
Three aggregates, light weight expanded shale, fireclay brick and pure limestone, have been used in high strength concrete subjected to cycles of temperature up to 300 C; all concretes showed marked deterioration of mechanical properties but extent of deterioration was governed by breakdown of bond between aggregate and mortar; this breakdown was least for fireclay brick and greatest for limestone; limestone concrete showed some deterioration of properties at 65 C and extent was influenced by chemical composition of cement used; attention is drawn to major importance of aggregate stability on performance of concrete containment vessels at elevated temperatures.
