Investigation of rock noise in landslides and cut slopes
It has been demonstrated that creeping landslides and unstable slopes emit audio-frequency sound waves; these subaudible rock noises can be detected over distances of several hundred feet in hard rock but attenuate below detectable level in distances of less than 100 ft in soft landslide material; rock noise tape recordings have been made with two or more instruments simultaneously in order to distinguish noise events having their origin in highly stressed regions of rock from noises of other origin.
