Dutch build power plant on 28-acre island
Power plant to produce 1.3 million kw power needing unlimited cooling water is being built on 28 acre artificial island in Ijssel Lake originally framed by diking in 1932; site was dredged of silt and mud to 33 ft deep hard sand base; after filling to 5 ft below surface, 8-ft high stone quay was built on island's perimeter, also sloping bank inside quay, from 6 ft below to 10 ft above water level, to prevent scouring; plant will rest on two thousand 46 ft long concrete piles driven through fill into solid sand base; 427 ft long and 47 ft wide reinforced concrete bridge links island to reclaimed mainland of Flevoland; plant cooling and design details and plans for future expansion.
