Accomplishments of industrial engineers in hospitals include study of pharmacy operations in Chicago hospital which reduced manpower requirements from 93 to 27 man hr/wk; production control system installed in operating room of large Chicago hospital reduced man hour requirements by 116 hr/wk, all of which were overtime hours; revision of laboratory reporting system provided better patient care and was able to show savings of $11,800/yr in printing costs alone; study of communications system provided one hospital with savings of $ 87,000; through utilization of industrial engineering techniques, another hospital was able to save more than & dollar;450,000 in construction costs, through methodical evaluation of space requirements.
