Two lifts hike Salt Lake City dome
Record is established for lift-slab equipment on 250 ton 203 ft diam thin-shell concrete dome at saving of $25,000; two-stage lift made earth mound, graded and shaped to dome's dimensions and geometry, from footing excavation, double as scaffolding for ceiling installation; 36 steel box columns erected to support dome; concrete tension ring beam 27-in. deep and 60-in. wide was cast on footing, centered on column line; steel collars for lift-slab operations placed around column were imbedded in ring beam; dense concrete used retarded sound to 65 db; 250 ton finished dome was lifted to 19 ft height at 2 ft/hr.
