Earthquake stress analysis in earth dams
Finite element method, which has been used extensively in static analysis of elastic continua, is extended to dynamic analysis of two-dimensional stress systems; method involves calculation of vibration mode shapes and frequencies, making use of stiffness matrix evaluated by finite element method and mass matrix formed by lumping mass at finite element nodal points; dynamic response is then calculated by mode-superposition method, response of each mode being obtained by step-by-step integration; method is demonstrated by earthquake analysis of triangular earth-dam cross section treated as elastic plane-strain problem.
