Bulk sea carriage of ore concentrates and thixotropic commodities
Description of cargo handling difficulties in transport of particular thixotropic commodity from Australia to Belgium; how they were overcome, and some conclusions that may be of advantage to others; problems arose during 1962 with bulk cargo of 10,781 tons of " lead fume", which is residue from ore processing plant, and consists of fine metallic powder mixed with water to form grey paste; casualty occurred during heavy weather and, of alternatives considered, washplate bulkheads were fitted to reduce effect of cargo movement; possible health hazards are also discussed.
