Reduction of initial setting of mortar which causes greatest shrinkage, by using minimum amount of water and by increasing amount of line in cement-line mortars and air in air-entraining mortars; proper curing (white pigment membrane cure is preferred), rubberized asphalt, polysulfide, or polyurethane sealants, PVC water stops, and silicones and other waterproofing compounds are recommended to minimize effects of moisture; very little can be done about thermal effects, air entrainment in mortar improves resistance to freezing and thawing.
