Hysteresis in moisture characteristics of ideal bodies
Lower bound is found for hysteresis in bodies comprising close packed spheres of equal radius; heuristic arguments imply its validity for looser packings; lower bound of drying suction is deduced by finding distributions of fixed amounts of water with least surface energy; wetting suction is deduced by considering when water surface in saturated region meets isolated collars; hysteresis is advantageous in building materials because it reduces redistribution of water entering wall from outside.
