Cooper river bridges -- Alike but different
Basically new and old bridge, linking Charleston with Mt Pleasant, are cantilevered through trusses linked by shore viaducts; centerlines are only 93 to 293 ft apart; changed clearance specifications, extensive use of prestressed concrete beams for supporting deck, and composite construction resulted in savings on new, wider bridge; extensive laboratory soil and pile tests established depth and type of piles for required bearing capacity in marine deposit with organic clay cover; 14 BP73 steel sections chosen over 14-in. prestressed concrete piles.
