Installing long caissons in Mississippi calls for ingenuity
Contractor developed driving head of 9-ton steel ingot, rock drill made from tunneling machine with oil well cutter heads and rubber covered steel seal for installation of 6-ft diam caissons supporting six piers of St. Louis' Poplar Street Bridge designed to carry 2165ft of eight-lane orthotropic-deck superstructure; four sections of cofferdam bracing were fabricated in Pittsburgh, assembled on shore, and anchored in position by driving four spuds through spudwells in corners of bracing.
