Inelastic steel beams under uniform moment
Out-of-plane behavior of closely braced steel wide-flange beams is examined; unloading (failure) of such beams terminates their rotation capacity and thus their usefulness in plastic design; theory of discontinuous yielding is used to estimate out-of-plane behavior in inelastic range and to provide analytical prediction of rotation capacity of beams under uniform moment; lateral support spacing is found to be function of quantity of rotation which beam is required to deliver; it is shown that condition of spans has marked influence on behavior of beam; effective length concept is used to account for this effect.
