Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Arch in St. Louis, Mo, is 630 ft high and combines stainless steel skin with carbon-steel frame held by prestressed rods and stiffened by concrete; arch, which spans 630 ft out to out at ground level, has no real structural skeleton; its inverted catenary shape puts all parts in compression; design for 150-mph wind contemplates 18-in. deflection at top; creeper derricks climbing each leg set assembled triangular frames 12 ft high that varied from 54 ft on side at ground level to 17 ft at crown; temporary strut at 530-ft level stiffened structure while creepers moved over rapidly curving top section to close arch.
