Main considerations that led to construction of Geesthacht barrage system are described; increased power of tidal surge, together with improved flow conditions have resulted, upstream of Hamburg, in strong scour of river bed and marked lowering of water levels; investigations carried out to evaluate amount of scour, damage already done and damage to be expected in future are reported; requirements of Geesthacht dam system in regard to farming, navigation, and power development; pumped storage system with useful head of about 80 m built by Hamburg Electricity Works.
