Major deficiencies in present designs for earthquake resistant buildings situated in New Zealand are insufficient knowledge of expected earthquake forces which will be applied to given building and its supporting subsoil and amount of plastic deformation of building and its subsoil which may be permitted to occur under earthquake forces; plastic reserve of buildings and their subsoil is being investigated by building instrumentation program, supplemented by building vibrator studies.
