High railway bridge was cantilever launching feat
Jaun Valley Bridge, 90 m above River Drau, provides direct railway link between St. Paul and Bleiburg, Austria; bridge is steel-plate box girder superstructure, trapezoidal in section and continuous over 5 spans, supported by 2 river piers and 2 land piers and abutments; timber rail bearers are placed directly on girders; each land pier was constructed on 6 well type foundations, 4.5 m diam, in rows of 3; river piers were built on reinforced concrete caissons to depth of 17 m; launching tracks were built behind each abutment from which one-half of superstructure could be cantilevered outward.
