Hammersmith flyover
Hammersmith flyover is 4-lane viaduct overpassing complex intersection and providing link between Cromwell Road Extension and Great West Road on main western exit from London; its construction was final stage of careful scheme of traffic improvement in congested focal point of converging traffic streams; it is precast, prestressed concrete, continuous structure 2043 ft long between abutments with 16 spans mostly of 140 ft; it is first major traffic structure in Great Britain to be supported only on central columns and deck structure has central spine strong in bending and torsion with projecting transverse cantilevers.
